Lake County is truly a county for all seasons. It offers year-round enjoyment to all its residents and guests. State and Federal lands make up over 48% of Lake County and provide outstanding opportunities for all kinds of sports and activities. Lake County has several hundred miles of trails for snowmobile and ORV riding, many lakes, rivers, and streams for year-round fishing and thousands of acres of forest land for a full slate of hunting activities.
Yates Township, located along the near southeastern border of Lake County, contains the community of Idlewild, which surrounds the lake it was named for. The headwaters of Pere Marquette River (or the "PM" as it is often called) run through here, with a couple of public access points adjacent to Broadway Road, where it crosses. About half of the township is contained in the Manistee National Forest.
In 1979 Idlewild was designated as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 2007, Yates Township was selected to participate in the Transformation Initiative established by Governor Jennifer M. Granholm to "create jobs, build a thriving community and ensure a bright future for Idlewild".  Among the many projects of the initiative include the recently completed Lake Idlewild Park and Access Area, a partnership effort between Yates Township and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
Today Idlewild remains a tranquil, lovely retreat for its 800 year-round residents, though during the summer months the community swells to about 5,000. The Idlewild Resort area offers incredible recreational opportunities for the outdoorsman, the nature lover, and the whole family, including hiking, biking, horseback riding, bird watching, camping, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, wildlife viewing, etc. The area’s three pristine lakes and the best public beach access in Lake County provide the perfect setting for leisurely boating, jet skiing, sunning, swimming, and other warm weather pursuits.
Fishing in Lake County is exceptional. Each year, people from around the world come to fish for salmon, steelhead and trout. Numerous inland-lakes support walleye, pan fish, bass, pike, and a variety of other fresh fish species.
Today, there are about a dozen businesses in Idlewild, four churches, a motel, a couple of restaurants, a store.
Idlewild is a short drive to shops, amenities, services, and schools: 4 miles to Baldwin City, 16 miles to Reed City, 26 miles to Irons, 32 miles to Grand Rapids, 37 miles to Ludington, which is on Lake Michigan.
Idlewild is an active community with a host of activities and recreational events occurring throughout the year, such as National Idlewild Week, huge 4th of July festivities with Community Parade around Lake Idlewild and Fire Works, Arts and Crafts Shows, and many other activities.
Idlewild hosts two annual summer music festivals: the Idlewild Music Fest in July and the Idlewild Jazz Festival in August.
Idlewild Historic & Cultural Center is a wonderful tourist attraction. Inside, the spacious center offers a history exhibition detailing Idlewild’s origins and highlights, and a small gift shop selling, among other trinkets, cuddly bears wearing t-shirts that read “I Idlewild, MI.”
